It was 4 o’ clock in the afternoon and this one-man band had been playing for a good few hours, here in the city center. The odd passer by stopped and gave him a few coins, but most didn’t. The street musician’s life is a hard one when the public isn’t appreciative, I thought. He pounded away at the drum kit, which sounded like an empty old tin can, and the sounds filling the street reminded me of a cat sliding off a state roof… Nevertheless, it’s important to persevere in whatever it is you do. Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936), the Spanish philosopher and writer, once said: “The only way to hit the nail on the head is to hit the horseshoe a hundred times.”
