It was cold that morning when they arrived in Segovia. These young people are used to the cold, seeing as they come from the northern US state of Minnesota. The moment they arrived on the campus we took a “family photo” in the main cloister, so that they’ll have a souvenir of the visit they can keep all their lives. From now on, they’ll have to adapt to a new way of life, a new language and a new culture. They’re American students from the College of Saint Benedict/St. John’s University of Minnesota who are taking an immersion program in Spanish language and culture at the IE University campus in Segovia. Over the next few months they’ll have classes covering Spanish language, art, culture, mythology, and history. In order to make it easier for them to immerse themselves in life in Spain, they’re staying with Segovian families to get a real feeling for Spanish culture by learning about customs and practices first hand. The main objective is for them to return to the US speaking perfect Spanish and with a deep understanding of Spain.
