It isn’t a stairway to heaven, but it certainly looks like one. Segovia’s aqueduct comes to life at midday, playing with its shadow as the sun beats down vertically onto passers by. It’s fun to go up to the high part of the city, stand at a viewpoint, and look up and down the length of the aqueduct, trying to count shadows it casts. They look like steps that make up a stairway etched in stone. As the day moves on, the steps fold in on themselves until they disappear. At dusk the aqueduct comes back to life again. This time its impressive shadow is projected onto neighboring buildings, which is its way of saying goodbye to us before night falls.
